Ingredients:

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 4 tablespoons white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 egg
  • 3/4 cup raisins

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a large baking sheet.
  2. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Stir in the softened butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. In a small bowl, beat the buttermilk and egg together. Add this to the flour mixture, stirring just until moistened. Fold in the raisins.
  4. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead slightly. Form the dough into a round shape and place on the prepared baking sheet. Cut an ‘X’ into the top of the loaf with a sharp knife.
  5. Bake in the preheated oven for 45 to 50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the loaf comes out clean. Let the bread cool on a wire rack.
